Rotary shaft seals keep oil in and contamination out where a rotating shaft leaves the housing; the sealing lip rides the shaft at a controlled interference while the garter spring maintains lip load as the elastomer ages. Hydraulic failures are rarely isolated: a worn pump, restricted return line or degraded fluid will attack a new component the same way, so the circuit should be assessed as a whole before the part is swapped. Hydraulic and cooling parts are bench-tested at rated working pressure for leakage and flow before dispatch, and sealing faces are inspected for flatness and surface finish.
